A Land Trust Focuses on Conservation and Stewardship
Land trusts or land conservation societies are non-profit, charitable organizations dedicated to conserving land. They have expertise in legal conservation tools, land health assessment, and conservation and stewardship techniques.
Each land trust has a conservation focus. Based in Mountain View County, Legacy Land Trust’s focus is to conserve and help steward ecologically, agriculturally, and historically valued lands in central Alberta.
Land trusts help landowners, including governments, meet their conservation goals. All land trust projects are voluntary—in other words, they are usually initiated by a landowner, looking for assistance. Occasionally land trusts will reach out to landowners, but the landowners decide whether they want to work with the land trust or not.
As charities, land trusts are funded through donations from individuals and grants from government, foundations, or corporations.
